Custom Pattern Drafting: Duct Tape Body Casts & Corsetry Boning
By Cosplay Engineering Review Board•
Fabrication & Studio Summary
Tailoring custom armor patterns: creating exact torso duct tape doubles, tracing seamlines, adding ease, and inserting spiral steel boning for structural support.
Form-fitting cosplay armor requires drafting directly from an exact 1:1 anatomical mannequin created through duct tape casting.
1. Duct Tape Cast & Patterning Protocol
- The Cast Shell: Wrapping an old t-shirt in 3 cross-directional layers of non-stretching duct tape to capture shoulder slope and waist contours accurately.
- Dart & Seamline Transfer: Drawing seamlines directly on the shell with a permanent marker, cutting them free, and pressing flat onto poster board.
- Spiral Steel Boning: Inserting 6mm spiral steel bones into corset channels to support heavy shoulder pauldrons without collapsing the waistline.
